About me
I am a Neurologist with clinical and research interests in stroke.
My research applies molecular genetic and imaging techniques to investigate the pathogenesis of stroke, with a particular focus on cerebral small vessel disease.
My main areas of research are:
1. Stroke Genetics
In collaboration with colleagues worldwide we have identified novel genes for ischaemic stroke. including HDAC9. I also have a particular interest in monogenic stroke and run a National referral clinic for patients with CADASIL.
2. Cerebral Small Vessel Disease
My work in cerebral small vessel disease includes brings together neuropsychological assessment, MRI imaging to characterise white matter damage, and genetic and risk factor studies to improve understanding of pathophysiology and develop new treatment approaches.
3. Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound (TCD) Emboli Detection
We have developed techniques for detecting circulating cerebral emboli using transcranial Doppler ultrasound, and use both to this to evaluate novel anti-thrombotic regimes in phase II studies and predict risk in carotid stenosis.
4. Stroke Clinical Trials
I am PI for a number of RCTs in stroke including in symptomatic vertebral stenosis (VIST), cervical artery dissection (CADISS) and small vessel disease (PRESERVE)
